Short-term medical insurance is temporary health insurance for those individuals and families that have a need for health coverage for a specific period of time. If you are between jobs and you know exactly when your new group benefits will begin, short-term medical may be a good fit for you. If you are between jobs and have no idea how long you will be without health coverage, short-term medical might not be the right choice for you. Short-term medical insurance usually works best in a situation where the insured is very confident that he/she will need the coverage for 6 months or less.
It is very important to realize that if you purchase a 6-month short-term medical plan and you still haven't found a job after 6 months, you'll need to re-apply for a new plan. Should you become uninsurable during those 6 months or if you've had a significant claim history, you might not be approved for another 6-month plan. If you apply for a second 6-month plan and are denied coverage, you now have to answer yes to the question usually asked on health insurance application: have you ever been denied health insurance coverage?
It is very important to truly understand how short-term medical insurance works and it's also important to realize that the most important part of the decision making process is to know the length of time that the coverage will be required. You should not purchase short-term medical insurance strictly based on the cost. You might pay a little more monthly for an individual insurance plan but you won't have to worry about losing coverage after 6 months. Individual insurance plans continue for as long as you continue to pay your monthly premiums. You should always compare a short-term medical plan to an individual insurance policy.

Plan Features
Short-term medical is not available in New York, New Jersey or Massachusetts. States that do not allow the sale of short-term medical insurance plans usually have a guaranteed-issue individual plan that may be purchased. The ability to purchase a guaranteed-issue individual health insurance plan is a nice benefit to living in one of these states but the cost of the insurance is usually much higher than short-term medical insurance. |
